Interceptor for dogs is a parasite prevention treatment made by Novartis.

Interceptor destroys heartworms, two species of roundworms, hookworms and whipworms.

Interceptor Flavor Tabs by Novartis are for both dogs and cats. Interceptor only protects against heartworms, adult roundworms and adult hookworms in cats, however.

Heartworm disease can be deadly if not treated, so it is crucial to have your dog on some type of heartworm preventative medication.

In trials for Interceptor, dogs reacted very well with very few cases of allergy or side effects.

In trails, Interceptor administered at ten times the recommended dosage did not produce any side effects in cats. (However, you should not allow your pets to become over dosed at home!)

Depression/lethargy, vomiting, ataxia, diarrhea, convulsions, weakness and hyper-salivation are among the reported side effects in the few cases of adverse reactions.

Interceptor heartworm preventative medication consists of milbemycin oxime, in dosages depending on the weight of your pet.

The ranges are 2.3mg (coded brown for dogs 2-10 lbs), 5.75mg (coded green for dogs 11-25lbs), 11.5mg (coded yellow for dogs 26-50lbs) and 23.0 mg (coded white for dogs 51-100 lbs).

Interceptor Flavor Tabs are a convenient way of packaging the medication into a yummy snack for your dog.

Interceptor for dogs should be given monthly and the owner should watch carefully to ensure the entire dose has been ingested.

In the rare case that the whole dose has not been taken, the missing quantity will need to be re-dosed.

Interceptor heartworm preventative should not be used on puppies of less than four weeks of age and less than 2lbs of body weight.

Once they have reached the minimum age and weight criteria they need to be tested, and once they are in the clear, they can start treatment.

Interceptor faces competition from Heartgard Plus, Iverhart Plus and Sentinel.

All four brands come in a flavored tablet for easy dispensing.

Sentinel also has added flea control with the addition of an extra compound (Lufenuron).

Heartgard and Iverhart contain ivermectin to control heartworms and pyrantel for treating intestinal worms.

Enterceptor and Sentinel include whipworms in their spectrum of influence, whereas Heartgard does not, but it does control more species of hookworms than its rivals.

by Rebecca Foxton

Going beyond the claims of any other grooming tool, the FURminator deShedding Tool is guaranteed to cut down on your pet’s shedding.

All dogs & cats have the potential to look less than well groomed but the problem is exacerbated when you are dealing with a long coat and bad weather.

Matting in a pet coat is a big problem especially in winter and spring, and under belly hair can get caked in mud and tangled and knotted.

A lot of dogs really hate being clipped, but here’s a solution you can do at home with little fuss… the FURminator.

The FURminator deShedding Tool is a patented product that gently and effortlessly removes dead, loose undercoat and excess fur.

Clipping is something our animals really do not enjoy. Have you had the same experience? The answer is the Furminator.

Instead of cutting, the FURminator rather gently sweeps away the matted hair; meaning pets won’t get freaked out.

Reducing stress for Fluffy also reduces stress for Dad and Mom, so everyone can begin having fun again soon.

The FURminator is available in Large (4.0 Inch), medium (2.65 Inch) and small (1.75 Inch) sizes, and they are priced according to size.

A purple version especially for cats is also available.

The FURminator’s ergonomic easy-to-grip handle and stainless steel construction provide a great tool for getting rid of matted fur, whether your pet has short or long hair.

The FURminator is so easy to use, you’ll be sorry that you put off owning one for so long.

One of the FURminator’s largest benefits is that it brings out a coat’s natural oils, leaving it soft, shiny and healthy.

Also remember that dogs groomed with the FURminator deShedding tool will shed 90% less, so your home will definitely be cleaner.

Another advantage is that the FURminator will reduce the number of floating particles in the air, creating a more suitable environment for those who suffer from allergies, dog and human alike!

Pet lovers adore the FURminator, and they often see spectacular improvements in the moisture level of their pet’s skin and coat, as well as a reduction in matting and a beautiful silkiness to their fur.

Try the FURminator for yourself to find out how easy and effective grooming can be, regardless of the weather, season, breed, and your own time constraints.

If you’re looking for a little dog with an enormous personality, the Bichon Shih Tzu mix is the dog for you. This sought-after breed is a cross between the French lap dog, the Bichon Frise, and the Chinese lap dog, the Shih Tzu. Breeders have refined both breeds for centuries to create happy canine companions who want to be the center of your world.

Some toy dogs are nervous and high strung, but the Bichon Shih Tzu has a fun, carefree personality. The Bichon Shih Tzu wants to spend its every waking moment with its owner. This is not a breed that should be left at home all day while you’re at work. Take your Bichon Shih Tzu with you whenever possible. The dog will charm everyone it meets, and both you and the dog will enjoy spending time together.

The breed is a cross between the Bichon Frise, a French-bred lap dog, and the Shih Tzu, a Chinese-bred lap dog. Looking at Bichon Shih Tzu pictures reveals that the breed gets it flat face from the Shih Tzu and its fluffy coat from the Bichon Frise.

The Bichon Shih Tzu loves the camera, and if you like digital photography, the hard drive on your computer will soon be full of Bichon Shih Tzu pictures. Be sure to take plenty of shots during each photo session to ensure that you get one or two good portraits of your dog.

Some of the best dog portraits are created when the dog is tired or sleepy, so play with your dog to encourage sleepiness, then grab your camera and start snapping when your dog starts to yawn. Get down to your dog’s eye level, even if it means lying on your stomach on the floor. Take a variety of shots of your dog looking at the camera as well as candid shots of the dog at rest or at play.

Light colored dogs like the Bichon Shih Tzu photograph well against a dark, neutral background. Stage a dark backdrop, free of clutter, to get the best pictures of your dog.

Take your dog to your veterinarian for a complete examination as soon as you get your dog. The vet will diagnose any health conditions, give your dog all the required vaccinations, and set your dog up on a schedule of regular health maintenance so your dog can be the perfect Bichon Shih Tzu picture of health.

Crossing the Bichon Frise and Shih Tzu breeds has eliminated some of the problems typical of each breed. By extending the Shih Tzu’s nose, the dog breathes easier, and with the Bichon Frise’s tear ducts, there are fewer issues with watery eyes. The Bichon Shih Tzu mix has fewer skin problems than a purebred Bichon Frise.

The Bichon Frise is an all-white, curly-furred lap dog that originated in the Mediterranean region. This breed is believed to be a mix of Barbet, poodle and generic white lap dog. The breed has an illustrious history. An early version, called the Barbichon, existed as early as 600 B.C. This dog accompanied Spanish sailors on trade routes throughout the Mediterranean region.

Its name was shortened to Bichon over time and later was changed to Bichon Frise by the French. The name in French loosely means curly lap dog. In the Middle Ages, the Bichon Frise was the favorite dog of French royalty. It fell out of favor when it became commonplace but gained popularity when it was discovered that the dogs could be trained as circus performers.

A good Bichon Frise breeder is an expert on the history of the breed as well as breed standard characteristics.

The American Kennel Club has breed standard traits required for every breed of dog. For Bichon Frise to participate in AKC competition, the breed standard includes a dense undercoat of fur and a curly topcoat, seven to twelve pounds in weight and nine to twelve inches in height, is outgoing and friendly in disposition, at least ninety percent pure white fur, a black mouth and nose with brown or black expressive eyes and groomed according to the AKC standard. Competition Bichon Frise are groomed regularly and fur is full volume in appearance.

When dogs are not competing, fur is cropped in a shorter puppy cut which requires less maintenance. A Bichon Frise breeder should be able to educate potential buyers of breed standard characteristics as well as how to maintain and groom Bichon Frise. One important trait to note is that Bichon Frise fur is hypoallergenic to humans, however the Bichon Frise suffers from many skin, eye and ear allergies.

Buyers must do their research before choosing a Bichon Frise breeder. Buyers should educate themselves on the history and breed standard characteristics so that they have a general idea of what to look for and what questions to ask the breeder. Unfortunately, there are illegitimate breeders working to sell fake Bichon Frise, or worse, unhealthy Bichon Frise, to make a profit from unsuspecting buyers. A good sign of a bad breeder is one who sells Bichon Frise to pet stores.

No loving breeder would ship and sell puppies like merchandise to just any consumer. A second warning sign is if the breeder is reluctant, unwilling, or unable to provide proper information of the Bichon Frise such as pedigree, medical records, and registration papers. Finally, a bad breeder will not offer any guarantee on the dog’s health or behavior.

They do this because they care about the type of home the Bichon Frise will be going to. If any of these traits are not present, the Bichon Frise breeder is probably not running a legitimate business and may be selling fake or unhealthy Bichon Frise.

It can be hard to decide on a particular breed of dog, especially since there are just so many wonderful options. One of the most popular breeds of dog in the world is the Pug, and this is really not a surprise. After all these dogs are small in stature, friendly, energetic, adorable and make great family pets, even if there are young children.

There are a few aspects to raising a Pug that should be taken into careful consideration by anyone who is considering getting one as a pet however, and more than anything this refers to Pug care. Pugs require a great deal of care but it is just as important to realize that caring for a Pug can be very rewarding and even lots of fun. There is also the issue of pug allergies, and if your dog is scratching his skin or developing blisters regularly, odds are that they have allergies.

When it comes to Pug care one of the first and most important issues that need to be discussed involves Pug allergies. Allergies in dogs can be as severe as uncontrollable itching and the development of blisters. One of the most effective ways to deal with Pug allergies is to give them regular baths with cool water. This will help to soothe and cool their skin, and shampoos that contain eucalyptus and Aloe Vera are often helpful as well.

Of course the most effective way to manage your dog’s allergies is by keeping them away from the specific allergens that are causing them problems, but this is not always possible. There are a number of different medications that can help to relieve the symptoms of allergies, and this includes antihistamines such as steroids.

Also keep in mind that these shots will often take months even years to take effect in your dog and they can also be very expensive. There are several different kinds of dog allergies and different kinds of treatment, and it is important that you choose the right one for your dog.

Pug allergies can definitely be difficult to deal with, but there are a few tips that will be very helpful to you here. Ensuring that the dog is neutered, bathing them at least once a week and wiping them down with a wet cloth frequently for instance are all great ideas because they will help keep the dog clean and healthy, particularly his fur, which is where many allergens tend to hide and cause problems.

Basically the idea here is to keep your dog as clean as possible and in particular their fur because this is where allergens tend to hide and cause them problems. It also appears that there are some breeds, which tend to be more allergic than others, and the Pug falls into this category.

Also keep in mind that dog allergen may persist for months even years after the dog is gone, so you will want to remove all carpeting from your home if the dog is an inside pet and also make sure to steam clean all upholstered furniture, vacuum all hard floors, wipe down all surfaces and furniture, and replace any air conditioner and heater vent filters.

by Melissa Coleman

Shar Peis have fascinating looks and their wrinkled faces and hippo-like appearance is unique in the world of canines. And but for the efforts of a few Hong Kong breeders, the Chinese Shar Pei would at one time have been destroyed by the Chinese Communists. It is an ancient breed that comes from an ancient land and is related to Tibetan Mastiff as well as to the Chow Chow.

Chinese Shar Pei’s are very compact animals that have muscular bodies and a square appearance that along with a blocky head makes it a very unique looking breed, partly because its face is very much like that of a hippopotamus. The Shar Pei can weigh about fifty-five pounds at most and it moves with strength and balance and there is a good rear-end drive to it as well. The name is symbolic of the Chinese words for coarseness of coat that are of three main types including the bear coat, horse coat and also brush coat.

Everyone likes the Chinese Shar Pei and it is also famous for being very calm and it appears confident as well. In addition, it has a dignified demeanor though at the same time it tends to remain aloof from others and does not easily befriend strangers, and is often quite arrogant as well.

Shar Peis can often turn into clowns when in the company of other Shar Peis and without a doubt has a temperament that is very unique. While at the same time is also not a very easy animal to train, though it does need to be socialized and be made to understand that the master is the boss.

The Shar Pei does like human contact and is well disposed to being around people, though to ensure that it does not have any serious faults, before purchasing or obtaining the Chinese Shar Pei, it would be a good idea to only obtain it from reputable breeders who have ensured proper breeding practices and given it opportunity to interact with other humans. Once the Shar Pei understands its place in your home, it will make an excellent and also dependable fellow family member and a good children’s playmate as well.

Most recognized for its wrinkled looks, the Chinese Shar Pei is a most sought after breed and this is quite a change because the breed was once considered as being a rare one when it was in danger of becoming extinct, no thanks to the efforts of Chinese Communists in trying to end this breed.

However, because some good breeders did not give up on this breed, it is now a very popular breed that has survived those hard times and is being carefully bred even in America.

However, the Shar Pei can give its owners a few headaches because of its tendency to suffer from health problems that will require giving it timely protective care. Thus, as a prospective owner, you need to be aware of such issues and be prepared to deal with them. However, the Chinese Shar Pei is well loved and is also a very possessive animal that can prove to be a great family pet dog. In addition, you need to ensure that you have obtained your Shar Pei from reputable breeders if you don’t want to end up with a pet that has many faults.

No breed of dog works harder than the brave, majestic German Shepherd. As you read these words on your computer screen, all over the world German Shepherd dogs are guarding people and property, working alongside police and military officers in perilous conditions, guiding the blind, assisting the disabled, standing by for search and rescue missions, and relaxing with their owners as beloved pets. That’s how it has been since the breed originated as a herding dog.

German Shepherd care is something every owner wants to learn more about, so they can give their dogs the very best in healthcare and diet. Some German Shepherd dogs are bothered by allergies and have skin problems that leave them biting and scratching at their skin. By learning more about your dog’s nutritional needs, you can easily prepare high-quality, homemade food for your German Shepherd, using ingredients commonly found in most grocery stores to provide the best German Shepherd nutrition available.

Providing for your German Shepherd’s care means you should provide the best dog food you can afford. An economical solution to high-priced premium dog foods is to make your own dog food. Start with five basic ingredients, and turn them into a collection of German Shepherd dog food recipes that your dog loves.

If you lack cooking experience, purchase a recipe book that features German Shepherd dog food recipes. After you have prepared meals for your German Shepherd for a few weeks, you will start to get an idea of what your dog likes, and you will find yourself experimenting with ingredients.

A dog food recipe that your German Shepherd might enjoy could include these ingredients: Lean ground beef for the protein, oatmeal for the starch, carrots for the vegetable, corn oil for the fat, and molasses and salt for the seasoning. A German Shepherd dog food recipe for a working dog or a dog with skin allergies should also include an egg for additional protein to keep the skin from drying out.

Any changes to a German Shepherd’s care should be made gradually to give your dog time to adjust to the change. The same is true of changes to German Shepherd nutrition. When you pick your puppy up from the breeder, contact the breeder in advance and ask for a sample of your puppy’s food so you can continue feeding your new puppy the food to which it is accustomed.

Slowly wean your puppy off the breeder’s food by replacing the breeder’s food with your homemade, nutritious food, in small amounts at a time, until eventually your healthy, nutritious dog food is the only food your German Shepherd is eating.

Consult your veterinarian before you make any changes to your German Shepherd’s diet. If your German Shepherd has been diagnosed with a medical condition or takes prescription medication, consulting your vet is extremely important, as ingredients in dog food may interact with your German Shepherd’s medications. The more information about your German Shepherd’s care you can learn, the better care you can give your dog.

Introduction

by Floella McFee

Introduction

The cause of shyness in dogs may be simply its personality. Sadly though, a dog that has been abused, will demonstrate behaviours that are ultra- submissive, such as excessive urination. As dogs are sociable animals, they do like to know where they stand in relation to the rest of their immediate social group: they are naturally part of a hierarchical pack; therefore any activity that involves socialisation will help to boost confidence.

Dog Training Activities

Positive social interaction is key, and basic obedience training can be a good place to start. The best system to use would be one that rewards good behaviour with praise and treats, but ignores bad behaviour. Fido will have fun and learn that he will be rewarded when he gets things right, but not punished if it goes a bit awry. Nobody responds to constant negativity. Agility training is to be recommended in particular as exercise is great for relieving stress.

Shy of People?

If dog is nervous around people, have a friend help out with gradual desensitization. The friend should not make any bold moves: basically anything that might appear potentially threatening to the dog, particularly do not look the dog directly in the eye. Slowly allow the dog to investigate the friend, with the aid of treats held in the hand, use a low stance, and a calm and measured tone of voice. Once the friend can look directly at the dog without any adverse reaction, then physical contact can be made via petting, such as gently rubbing the chest. Attending classes in obedience and agility are also a good way to stimulate social interaction with other dogs and owners

Good Owner Behaviour

Improving your own behaviour patterns will lessen the chances of the dog exhibiting behaviours that requires scolding. It’s not a good idea to place a temptation in the dog’s path such as a slipper to chew on, or an open bin to raid: the dog cannot be held responsible for behaving as a dog. Dogs also rely on body language as a major form of communication: how you approach a dog, how you look at dog, even vocal tone, will have an effect on his behaviour. Put yourself a doggy-eye level; keep the voice low, calm and measured: no extremities of volume or pitch.

Conclusion

Above all, never be abusive, as that may have lead to the confidence problems in the first place, particularly with a dog that had similar experiences in the past. As with children, confidence in dogs comes with praise and gentle instruction.

A pet store cannot give you the attention and information you need to have when selecting your Havanese puppy. Therefore, it is best to go directly to the breeder as this also allows you to see where the puppy comes from. In a pet store, you would never know if that puppy came from a puppy mill or other terrible circumstances, which could lead to behavior problems.

Pet store employees are not focused solely on learning about the Havanese puppies they get in, as they have many more animals to sell and other responsibilities within the store. So, they may only be able to tell you the basics such as how big they might get and how long they are expected to live.

But to truly prepare yourself for a Havanese puppy you need much more knowledge then that. And this is why going to a Havanese breeder is the best option for you.

Now that you know the reasons why to stay away from pet stores when searching for your new puppy, you now need to take steps to find the right breeder. Just because they are a breeder does not mean you want to go with them. This is an investment of not only about twenty years with your dog but of a lot of money as well. Your Havanese breeder should have a lot of information to provide you with and be willing to take as much time as needed for you to fully understand the Havanese.

It is best to prepare a list of questions you have just to make sure that you don’t get caught up in the moment of picking out a cute puppy instead of educating yourself in what their history is and what to expect from the Havanese. Make sure you investigate the puppies home and surroundings so that you know your puppy is not coming from a puppy mill. The breeder should have plenty of love for the pups and Havanese information for you to review and think over and this is not something that you will find with pet store employees.

Time is really what you need to give yourself when deciding you are ready to select a Havanese puppy. You want to make sure that you are selecting not just the right puppy for you but the right avanese breeder as well. Not paying close attention to a breeder’s lack of love or knowledge about the dog can lead to several serious situations down the road. It is always best to try and avoid surprises with the ownership of your Havanese. And surprises are all you will get from a Havanese bought from a pet store.

Make sure that the breeder allows you to look around in order to get a general feel for the environment that the puppy has been raised in. You also need to listen to your gut feeling so that you are not getting a puppy from a breeder who doesn’t have all their information right.

If you get a weird feeling from the breeder or the home environment of the puppies you need to go somewhere else. This is a decision to make wisely and one to be made with a breeder, not with an hourly pet store employee.

Heartgard Plus, a combination of ivermectin and pyrantel, has been made the leading brand of heartworm preventative by veterinarians because of it’s outstanding efficacy.

It is not currently possible to buy Heartgard with no prescription, so you would need to consult your vet before starting treatment.

Three different dosages of Heartgard Plus are available to cover all sizes of dogs.

These dosages are packaged for dogs weighing 0-25lbs, 26-50lbs, or 51-100lbs and can be purchases in a convenient 6 dose/6 month or 12 dose/12 month supply.

Each weight range is packaged with a corresponding color. Blue is for dogs 0-25lbs, Green for dogs 26-50lbs, and Brown for dogs 51-100lbs.

This makes it easier for owners to recognize which package contains the correct dosage for their dog.

Although there is competition from at least one discount generic, Heartgard remains a product of choice.

The monthly dose can be used on puppies as young as six weeks, small dogs, breeding females, stud males, the list goes on.

For puppies under 6 months, they should be tested and given a clean bill of health for heartworm before being started on the preventative program.

Heartgard Plus chewables, in addition to protecting against heartworms, two species of roundworms, and three species of hookworms, are beef flavored to make giving them to your pet a much more agreeable process.

Dogs should be tested annually for heartworm at the vet clinic.

When you buy Heartgard, you also have the reassurance that very few animals have had any kind of allergy to it, or neurological malfunction.

The company that manufactures Heartgard, Merial, also makes Frontline, Enacard, Recombitek, Imbrab, and Oravet. You will know that the Heartgard Plus chewables that you purchase for your dog are in good company!

Merial quickly addressed the issue and announced that wheat gluten is not present in Heartgard for dogs, and it is therefore unaffected by the controversy over wheat gluten.

Use caution when considering the purchase of cheap Heartgard online unless you are very familiar with the supplier.

Heartgard provides you with a method of reminding yourself when it is time for your dog’s monthly dose.

With modern life as busy as it is, it’s so easy for that one thing to slip your mind, so the Heartgard dogs’ site will send a reminder email on a monthly basis.
