Your Pet Needs Good Food For Health

by Jolie Mitchel

Having a pet is so important. Some people feel that their pets are family. Thus, when the pet falls ill, it’s traumatic - for the human as well as the animal.

It’s important to provide our four-legged friends with a balanced diet. Healthy food can be key to overall good health, and good health in general is the best way to prevent illness.

Choosing a healthy dog food in particular can be complicated because of the many options available. However, you can give your dog a more healthy life with just a little research. You simply need to know what makes a particular brand of food a healthy choice - and what makes it one to avoid.

Many of us assume that healthier dog foods are those with more expensive price tags. While this may be the trend, it is not the rule. The important aspect when taking into account a pet food is the ingredients in that food. Foods to avoid include those with a lot of preservatives, “filler” ingredients, dyes and colorings, extremely high fat content, and artificial flavorings.

As a general “rule of thumb”, the fewer items on the ingredients’ list that you can easily identify, the less healthy it will be for your dog. This is not always true, but generally if you have a hard time pronouncing the name of the ingredient, it’s probably an additive to avoid.

Pet foods with organic ingredients are usually good choices. Pesticides should be avoided, and are often used to keep insects away from commercially produced foods; organically-grown (grown without chemicals) are pure, healthier, and usually taste better. Although organic foods may be slightly more expensive, they are a better choice, if available.

Of course, you can make your pet’s food yourself. You can find a lot of free recipes for dog foods online. This allows you to making custom meals for your dog. This can be fun; plus, his enjoyment of a good meal can be very rewarding for you - it feels good to know that you’re giving your pet the good diet he needs to be as healthy as possible.

In fact, your dog’s life can depend on whether he eats well enough. If disease strikes, your dog needs to have been in good health previously to get better. Good bones, strong muscles, and a healthy sleek coat all begin with a good diet that has all of the essential nutrients.
