If you are a dog fan like myself then you will find the mastiff to be a very interesting dog. This article will focus on the Spanish mastiff (i.e. Mastin de Espanol). The Spanish mastiff has an active parent club in the States which is working to have the breed recognized by the Foundation Stud Service.

The Foundation Stud Service hs strict requirements for accepting a breeed. It’s unfortunate but at this time the Spanish Mastiff doesn’t qualify for membership. We are sure this very popular mastiff breed will soon qualify and become even more popular.

Mastiff Dog Origins

This dog is part of the mastiff breed and originally from Spain. In fact in some parts of Spain this dog is used as a guard dog for sheep and cattle. Noted for having an even temper the Spanish Mastiff is gentle mannered with children. This dog is prone to aggression with other dogs and will not tolerate strangers. The mastiff dog is usually kept in the outdoors. If the situation arises where the dog needs to be kept inside then it should have access to a large fenced in yard and of course daily walks.

This breed of Mastiff is known for being large. They tend to be longer then they are tall, deep chests and long legs. They have a deep muzzle, large head and of course the iconic mastiff dewlap is present.

What is the dewlap? The dewlap is the fold or folds of loosely hanging skin beneath the chin that drapes over the top of the chest. It functions as a predator deterrent. This is because the would be predator is not able to sink their teeth into this most vulnerable portion of the body. The coat on this breed can be very dense. The color is usually brindle but may be lemon,fawn,wolf gray or black and white. Their coat serves the purpose of protection against extremes of weather.
